So you're in a relationship, and you want to talk about it! Ask yourself this question...

Do I have enough vocabulary to talk about my relationship??

Do you have trouble using the English that you learned at school to talk about complicated things like relationships?

You're in the right place if...

  • You want to learn cool phrasal verbs to use when you talk about romance.

Let's check out the 10 best phrasal verbs for relationships.

FALL FOR

Imagine you go on a date and like EVERYTHING about the person. You like their voice, their fashion, their funny jokes....

The phrasal verb we use in this situation is "FALL FOR".

"I've finally found someone special! He took me out on a date in the weekend and I have completely fallen for him!"

GET ALONG

Were you the rare child that never fought with your brother or sister?

Did you always play together? And are you still best friends today?

If you did, you got along well together.

"My sister and I always got along. We never fought and now we even go on holidays together. She is probably my best friend in the whole world."

AS OUT

You've met someone and you want to get to know them more.

What do you do?? You ask them out of course!

The easiest way to ask someone out is to say "Let's ...", like "Let's go and see a movie this Saturday" or "Would you like to ...?", as in "Would you like to hook up at a cafe this weekend?".

"I can't believe it! We met outside the cafe after work, and he asked me for my phone number. I think he wants to ask me out."

GO OUT

After you ask someone out, the next step is to actually go out with them, or go on a date.

Common first date locations are a restaurant for a meal, a cafe for a chat, or a theatre to see a movie.

"I started going out with her a couple of months ago. She's so friendly and easy to be around."

 FALL OUT

After falling for someone, asking them out, and going on a date, the two lovers might start to get a little annoyed with each other.

We hope not, but it is common for couples to get annoyed with each other and start fighting about small things.

"He wants to go to Guam for a holiday, but I really want to go to New York. We really fell out over it this last weekend, and we still aren't talking to each other!"

CHAT UP

Have you ever been to a bar and someone you don't know started talking to you?

Did they ask to buy you a drink and tell you how beautiful you are?

Or maybe they sat down beside you a little too closely and started asking intimate questions.

If so, congratulations, you have been chatted up.

"I just went there to have a quiet drink after work, but some guy started to chat me up. We ended up having a great time and I think I'll see him again soon."

FIT IN

Sometimes when we move to a new school or a new place, it takes a while to make friends and feel comfortable.

Once you do get some new friends and start to feel welcome, you become a trusted and valued member of the group, like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

"Sarah brought a new friend along with us on Saturday. Her name was Amy. We went to the park to relax and chat. Everybody thought Amy was great, and she fitted in with us so well."

HIT IT OFF

When you meet someone for the first time and feel an instant attraction or liking, you have hit it off.

This does not have to be a romantic feeling, it could also just be a positive vibe with a new friend.

"She came in for an interview the other day, and we immediately hit if off. I think I'll really enjoy working with her."

GO FOR

Some people have a certain "type" of person they are attracted to.

This could be a personality type (bubbly or quiet), or a physical characteristic (tall).

"I love Rod Stewart's music but I can't understand why he always goes for blonde supermodels."

PAIR OFF

People often start out in a group of people because it is more comfortable than being with one other person.

However, two people from this group might separate from the group and become a couple.

This is known as pairing off.

"I really felt like we had paired off when we went to the cafe the other day. He held my hands and asked me to go out with him."
